Helen Blackwell Chiang Mai Challenge Cup 2016

This was first ice hockey tournament Helen Blackwell played for newly created Chiang Mai Griffins team. It was just after shed attended 3 Ice Hockey camps in UK. Helen played in both under 10 and under 12 category. In under 10 her team got gold and in under 12 her team won silver so for first tournament with new tram it was a great start.

Helen got winning goal in extra time and also was awarded Best defense player in the under 10 category. Her team were helped by guest players from Bangkok Warriors who she has played for as a guest player. The tournament was well attended with teams from Singapore and other parts of Asia. The other Chiang Mai team were helped by what was then players from top Bangkok team Canstar.

Singapore only had 8 players so were at a disadvantage but managed to do very well. The final match in under 12 category where Helen Blackwell scored the winning goal in extra time was really close. Griffins were playing for gold against their main rivals Phoenix. Just a few minutes into extra time during a play off near other teams goal the pluck landed just in front of Helen and she made a tremendous shot to put it into goal. Its a game she will probably remember all her life and one of most successful tournaments she had played in at that time.

For both categories nearly all tram were boys and in under 10 Helen Blackwell was the only girl player. In under 12 category she was joined by another girl player. The tournament was held at only Ice Rink in Chiang Mai and organizers had booked whole rink for whole period. The Ice Rink in Chiang Mai is ¾ size but is fine for playing all classes of Ice Hockey. See how they got on at 2017 Chiang Mai challenge cup and ones later.
